Die ehemalige EU-Parlamentspräsidentin Simone Veil erhält den mit 15.000 Euro dotierten Bürgerrechtspreis des Zentralrates Deutscher Sinti und Roma. Der Preis wird am 16. Dezember 2010 im Auswärtigen Amt in Berlin überreicht. Die Französin werde für „ihren vorbildlichen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Einsatz um die Anerkennung des nationalsozialistischen Völkermordes an den Sinti und Roma“ gewürdigt, begründete die Jury in Heidelberg ihre Entscheidung.
Simone Veil überlebte die Gefangenschaft im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz und war 1979 zur ersten Präsidentin des EU-Parlaments gewählt worden.
