„Milena Hübschmannová ist die Begründerin der tschechischen Romistik, doch nicht nur das. Sie hat einen immensen Verdienst an der Stärkung des Selbstbewusstseins der Roma“, verriet Jana Horváthová, Direktorin des Museums für Roma-Kultur. Hübschmannová beteiligte sich auch bedeutend an der Entfaltung der Roma-Literatur und der schriftlichen Erhaltung der Traditionen und Kultur der Roma in der Tschechischen Republik. Milena Hübschmannová wurde 1933 in Prag geboren. Sie studierte Hindi, Urdu und Bengalisch und erkannte während des Studiums, dass sie im Romanes Wörter erkennt, die dem Hindi ähneln. Sie begann sich immer mehr für die Sprache und Kultur der tschechischen Roma zu interessieren. In den 80iger Jahren unterrichtete sie bereits Romanes an einer Sprachschule und im Jahr 1991 wurde sie Professorin der Romistik am Indologischen Institut der Philosophischen Fakultät in Prag. Sie ist Autorin zahlreicher bedeutender Bücher und Übersetzungen aus dem Romanes, Mitverfasserin des Wörterbuches Romanes-Tschechisch – Tschechisch-Romanes und sammelte und dokumentierte traditionelle Roma-Märchen. Im Jahr 2005 verunglückte sie tragisch bei einem Autounfall in Südafrika. Das Museum für Roma-Kultur in Brno/Brünn zeigt zu ihrem Andenken die Ausstellung „Bylo nebylo/Es war einmal“
